Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), also commonly known as polyester chips, PET Chips, PET Resin, is prepared by ester exchange between dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol or by esterification between terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol to synthesize dihydroxyethyl terephthalate, and then polycondensation reaction. And it is a milky white or light yellow, highly crystalline polymer with a smooth and shiny surface. It has excellent physical and mechanical properties in a wide temperature range, and its operating temperature can reach 120°C.

Bottle grade PET resin chips are white granular, non-toxic and odorless, glass-like transparency and luster in appearance. Its relative density is generally between 1.30-1.38g/cm³. Compared with some other common packaging materials, its density is moderate and its weight is light, which not only facilitates the transportation of products, but also reduces transportation costs to a certain extent. It has a high melting point, usually between 250℃-265℃. This feature makes bottle-grade polyethylene terephthalate resin perform well in some application scenarios that need to withstand a certain temperature, such as the packaging of hot-filled beverages.

In addition, the transparency of bottle grade PET chips is extremely high, with a transmittance of about 90%. The high transparency makes the products in the package clearly visible. Whether it is beverages, food or cosmetics, consumers can intuitively see the status and color of the products, which has a positive effect on product sales. According to different uses, bottle-grade polyester chips can be divided into the following categories: ​

  • Water bottle-grade polyester chips are mainly used to produce drinking water bottles, mineral water bottles, etc. It is characterized by good transparency and hygienic safety, which can ensure that the packaged water is not contaminated and clearly show the purity of the water. Generally speaking, the viscosity of water bottle-grade PET resin is around 0.80. This viscosity range makes it easier to form bottles during blow molding and has good strength and toughness. ​
  • Carbonated bottle-grade pet chips are specially designed for carbonated beverage packaging. Since carbonated beverages contain high-pressure carbon dioxide gas, higher requirements are placed on the barrier properties and strength of packaging materials. Carbonated bottle-grade PET resin has better gas barrier properties, which can effectively prevent the leakage of carbon dioxide and maintain the bubbles and taste of the beverage. Its viscosity is relatively high, generally around 0.87, to meet the strength requirements of bottles under high-pressure environments and prevent bottles from breaking or deforming during filling and storage. ​
  • Hot-filled bottle-grade polyethylene terephthalate chips are suitable for the packaging of hot-filled beverages, such as tea, coffee, etc. These beverages are filled at a high temperature, usually between 80-95℃. Hot-fill bottle-grade PET resin needs to have good heat resistance and be able to keep the shape of the bottle stable and not deformed during high-temperature filling. At the same time, pet resin bottle grade also needs to have certain barrier properties to prevent the beverage from being affected by gases such as oxygen during storage and deteriorating. Its viscosity is generally around 0.78. Through appropriate molecular structure design and processing technology, it can meet the special requirements of hot filling. ​
  • Oil bottle-grade polyester chips are mainly used for packaging of edible oils, condiments, etc. Oil bottle-grade PET resin needs to have good oil resistance and barrier properties to prevent the penetration and oxidation of oily substances. Its viscosity is generally around 0.83. The higher viscosity makes the bottle have better strength, can withstand the weight of oil products, and maintain the integrity of the packaging during long-term storage. In addition, oil bottle-grade PET resin also needs to have good transparency so that consumers can clearly see the quality and balance of the oil in the bottle.

Fiber-grade PET chips are polymers with an amorphous structure. When the PET resin is heated to a certain temperature, its amorphous structure can be transformed into a crystal structure with a certain degree of crystallinity. The density is 1.33-1.38g/cm3. This product has heat resistance, good light resistance and acid resistance. It is not easy to react when it is in contact with oxidizing agents and reducing agents. However, it has poor alkali resistance, low hygroscopicity and poor electrical conductivity. 

According to the content of matting agent tio2, the textile or fiber grade polyester chips can be divided into: super bright (high gloss), glossy, semi-dull, (full) matte PET chips.
